Our exploration adventures began on Friday when we decided to drive to Hopeman. Jody worked early on a sermon, so that we could spend the rest of the day exploring the country. We did not have to drive far before we saw some seals playing right near the rocks along the coast. We were barely outside of Buckie.
After watching the seals for a while, we drove on to Hopeman. Abby was most excited to go there because of the dinosaur fossils preserved there. We spent the afternoon trekking for what seemed all of the Scotland coastline in search of these dinosaur footproots. We walked along a beautiful beach, climbed some awesome rock formations and sand dunes, passed through a golf course, and finally came to some cliffs with real caves. We thought we had found the fossils, but it turns out that they were not there either. Since we were all starving (we didn't think to pack a lunch) and exhausted from all the hiking, we decided to head back.
The trek back didn't seem nearly as long, since we stayed on the footpath....and wouldn't you know, we found the footprint at the entrance, where we had left the path to explore the beach! I guess we needed the exercise. There really was a prehistoric fossilized "reptile" footprint with a plaque that explained all about it. Of course, we took Abby's picture of her proudly comparing her handprint to the size of the reptile footprint. She had worked hard to find it!
Tired and hungry, we stopped at a local ice cream shop, where we got homemade, hand dipped chocolate and white chocolate cones. They were not quite as sweet as ice cream in the States, but they were delicious and refreshing. On the way driving to Hopeman, Abby had already spied the golden arches of McDonald's, so we stopped there for dinner. It was nice having something familiar, although their drink sizes are quite a bit smaller than ours! Our total bill only came to about £8($12), and our ice cream was only about £2, so we did fairly well on our first trip eating out.
