Post 29: Stones, Circles, and Castles

Stone circles are very common in the UK, so I definitely wanted to visit at least one site before we left the country. We visited the Recumbent Stone Circle, Easter Aquhorties (don't ask me how to pronounce it). Recumbent stone circles are only found in NE Scotland, and this circle is one of finest and complete examples that exists. A recumbent circle is believed to have been a ritual center which served as a means of lunar observation and enabled builders to establish seasonal calendars. They were used by farmers, and 99 such sites have been found. The name of this circle comes from a gaelic word meaning "field of prayer", and it is thought to be 4,000 to 5,000 years old.
We were close to Fraser Castle, so we decided to stop there. This castle had a woodland playground for kids, and Abby enjoyed exploring the teepee, wooden caterpillar, sculptures, and miniature stone circle. It was a chilly day, so we enjoyed hot tea in the on-site tea room. We just so happened to speak with Frederick from France, and he was able to tell us a bit about where we'll be visiting in another week. He even gave us his phone number so that we can call him if we need anything while in France!
